Tagging
Azure tags are metadata that you can assign to Azure resources, such as subscriptions, resource groups, and individual resources. Tags help in organizing, tracking, and managing resources more efficiently.
Usage and Importance
Tags are essential for several reasons:
- Organizing Resources: Tags allow you to group resources based on common attributes, making it easier to find and manage resources.
- Cost Management: Tags can help in tracking costs associated with different projects or departments by categorizing resources.
- Documentation: Tags provide a valuable reference for documentation, making it easier for teams to understand the purpose and usage of resources.
- Scalability: As the environment grows, tags ensure that new resources are added in a predictable and manageable way.
- Automation: Tags can also provide a static reference for several automation purposes. General bicep/terraform can use the value of tags as parameter for their deployment
Tagging Convention
For subscriptions in Yellow Arrow, the following tagging convention is used:
| Key | Input | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Prefix | Max 8-10 characters | Prefix for all resources in the subscription, eg: STLB-AVD |
| Environment | PRD/ACC/TST/DEV | Purpose of the subscription |
| Automation | True/False | General tag for enabling automation |
| auto_quickdeploy | True/False | True to include in the quickdeploy deployment. Requires Automation to be set to True |
| auto_alertrule | True/False | True to include in the alertrule automation. Requires Automation to be set to True |
| AUM | True/False | True to include in the update manager automation. Requires Automation to be set to True |
| Monitordashbooard | True/False | True to include data in customer dashboard |
| YA_VER | Numbers only | Version number at rollout |
By following this tagging convention, teams can maintain a clean and organized environment, which is essential for effective resource management and cost control.
